Michae Patchett-Joyce specialises in commercial litigation, international arbitration, business law, and indirect taxation (VAT).

In England & Wales, Michael has been instructed on cases at every level from the first-tier tribunals to the UK Supreme Court, as well as having acted in various cases heard by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Luxembourg.

Internationally, he has regularly appeared in cases heard by the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts, at both CFI and CA levels and has been instructed in Abu Dhabi Global Markets (ADGM) litigation.

Michael is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb). He has a thriving international arbitration practice, both as arbitration counsel and as arbitrator. He is experienced as panel chair, panel member or sole arbitrator in institutional or ad hocarbitrations. Much of his arbitration work is seated in Gulf jurisdictions (but not exclusively so). His experience includes arbitrations held under ICC, DIFC-LCIA, DIAC, LCIA and LMAA institutional rules.

He is a trained meditator, accredited by CEDR (Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution). He has recently been involved in the drafting and publication of emergency mediation provisions published by an international dispute resolution institution to help parties resolve issues in the CoViD and post-CoViD legal environment.

Michael has been a long-standing member of the Bar Council International Committee (including serving as Vice-Chair) and has been instrumental in several law capacity-building initiatives around the world.

He sits on the international advisory committee of the Saudi Centre for Commercial Arbitration (SCCA) and is a member of the Scientific Board of the MENA Business Law Review.

He has spoken extensively at international conferences on topics relating to commercial litigation, international arbitration and VAT and has also published articles, papers and book chapters on those subjects.

Steven Newbery 36 Commercial Practice Manager comments: Michael’s arrival at 36 Commercial highlights our continued growth, quality, and ambition. I am proud to welcome such an outstanding barrister to the team. Michael has an excellent international practice and will add further strength to our ever-growing international presence.

Our Work

  • Silks
  • Barristers
  • Chambers management
  • Clerks/Admin
  • Bespoke

When considering a chambers move with my team, I met with all the major players in the industry. Guy and Tony were our clear preferred choice.

They were authentic in their approach, challenged us when they felt it necessary and ultimately delivered a seamless service. Most importantly they showed complete discretion, which was for us the most important criteria.

Their reputation for being leaders in their field is well deserved and I would not hesitate to recommend them to others.
